LOPA: Layer of Protection Analysis
LOPA is a rigorous methodology for evaluating plant hazards and assessing risk. Every plant has multiple layers of safety protection. Each layer of protection has its own level of risk reduction. Each safety layer must be independent of the others, meaning that if there is a failure in one safety layer, another layer is not affected and can still perform. The LOPA must be conducted by a diverse team. There are many consulting and engineering firms that also provide LOPA services.
